A vocation is a gift from God, a "divine call" that comes through the Church. It is not something one simply chooses for oneself, but a response to God's invitation.
The Catholic Church recognizes several distinct vocations that are essential to the life and mission of the Church:
Priesthood: The Church emphasizes the vital importance of priestly vocations, as priests are called to exercise the "unique and sublime ministry of consecrating and absolving" and serve as a sacramental sign of Christ the Good Shepherd. Priests are ordained through the Sacrament of Holy Orders and commit to a life of celibacy.
Religious Life: Some are called to a life of exclusive service to God through religious consecration, living according to the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. This vocation is a witness to the mature humanity found in the unreserved giving of one's life to Christ.
Marriage: The sacrament of Marriage is a vocation where spouses are called to faithfulness and to build up the family community through their witness of love and by educating new generations.
Discerning one's vocation involves recognizing the divine call, being open and responsive to it, seeking guidance from the Church, and engaging in ongoing discernment. This process allows individuals to discover the unique way God is calling them to serve and fulfill their Christian mission.
